Apple Orchards that are worth the drive

Apple picking season and places to pick your own apples

For area families, apple picking season is a good excuse to trade suburban errands for a morning among the trees.

There are several apple orchards within a day trip of DuPage County, though choosing one takes more planning than grabbing a bag and driving west.

Kuipers Family Farm in Maple Park offers pick-your-own apples alongside a larger fall attraction area, making it an option for families who want more than picking.

Farther west, Honey Hill Orchard in Waterman has paired its orchard with a play area, farm animals and seasonal wagon rides.

Jonamac Orchard in Malta adds a bakery, corn maze and other activities for visitors ready to make an afternoon of it.

Lombard residents looking toward the southwest can consider Keller’s Farmstand in Oswego, where apple picking shares the calendar with pumpkins and fall festivities.

Woody’s Orchard in Plano is another choice for families drawn to apples, cider doughnuts and kid-friendly farm activities.

For a bigger festival outing, Goebbert’s in Pingree Grove combines orchard access with a broad lineup of attractions.

The best destination depends on whether the goal is a quiet picking trip or a full day of fall entertainment.

That distinction matters when comparing admission policies, since some farms charge separately for bags, attractions or festival entry.

Apple varieties also change as the harvest progresses, so a favorite may not be ready on the weekend you visit.

Weather can alter picking conditions quickly, and a busy weekend may leave fewer apples available than expected.

Before leaving area, confirm the orchard’s current hours, available varieties, picking rules and any reservation requirements directly with the farm.

Wear shoes suited to uneven ground, bring water, and give children room to enjoy the trip without rushing from attraction to attraction.

A little preparation can turn a simple bag of apples into one of autumn’s most satisfying family traditions.
