Glen Ellyn program highlights Civil War camp journalism |
Article Sub Headline |

Historian Dan Freas will present “The Organ of the Soldiers: An Introduction to Civil War Camp Newspapers.”
More than 100 camp newspapers are documented from the Civil War. Printers serving in Union regiments produced them using portable presses or printing equipment and materials obtained during military campaigns.
The newspapers carried accounts of soldiers’ living conditions, needs, recreation and local news. Because their contents were not subject to formal Army censorship, they offer candid perspectives on military life.
DATE: Saturday, Aug. 29
Freas will discuss the printers behind the publications, the technology they used and the subjects their newspapers covered. Admission is free for Glen Ellyn Historical Society members and children. Admission for nonmembers is $10. For information, call 630-469-1867 or visit gehs.org. |
