Lilacia Park Expansion in Lombard Planned for 2027 |
A $2.8 million park improvement project aims to add gardens, pathways and gathering spaces |

Visitors to Lilacia Park may have even more room to explore by the end of 2027, as a major expansion moves toward construction on the former Helen Plum Library property.
The Village of Lombard and Lombard Park District are joining forces on a $2.8 million project to transform the adjoining 1.2-acre parcel into a landscaped extension of the historic downtown destination.
Instead of adding athletic fields or courts, the plan emphasizes a quieter garden experience shaped by community feedback.
Preliminary features include meandering pathways, expanded plantings, comfortable places to sit, a shelter or gazebo, gathering areas and a nature-inspired children's play space.
An entrance near the southeast corner is intended to strengthen the connection between Lilacia Park and downtown Lombard.
The project reflects input collected through a 2024 survey and public open houses in July 2025, when residents expressed a strong preference for preserving the peaceful character of the park.
Village trustees approved $800,000 in economic development assistance on August 20, 2026, helping complete the proposed funding plan.
The remaining estimated costs are covered by $1 million from the park district's capital fund and $1 million in state economic development funding.
The partnership follows the park district's acquisition of the former library property in 2024 and an unsuccessful application for a separate $600,000 grant.
Supporters expect the improvements to benefit more than park visitors.
Expanded gardens and gathering space could encourage longer stays, accommodate community events and create additional foot traffic for downtown businesses.
The park already plays a major role in Lombard's identity and visitor economy, particularly during the annual spring lilac celebrations.
Local figures cited in project discussions estimated more than 147,000 park visits during 2025, while 67 percent of residents had visited within the preceding year.
The park district's published schedule places construction documentation in the final months of 2026, permitting through February 2027 and contractor bidding in January and February.
Provided the process stays on track, work is expected to begin in April 2027 and continue through November.
Those dates remain a planned schedule rather than a guaranteed opening date.
The design also seeks to respect Lilacia Park's horticultural legacy, including its connection to Colonel William and Helen Plum and landscape architect Jens Jensen.
With gardens, accessibility and places to gather at the center of the proposal, the expansion is intended to feel like a natural continuation of one of Lombard's most recognizable landmarks.
