Villa Park has a new name on the map, and this one celebrates the natural beauty already found in the neighborhood.

On Thursday, October 29, residents and local leaders gathered at Villa Avenue and Julia Drive to unveil the sign for Sugar Creek Park, the village’s first designated natural park.

The name was chosen with community input, giving residents a hand in shaping the identity of a green space they can enjoy for years to come.

The Garden Village Commission first invited residents to submit name suggestions and then opened a public vote to determine the favorite.

Sugar Creek Park emerged as the winning choice, and the unveiling brought that community decision to life.

What sets this property apart is its purpose.

Instead of emphasizing playground structures, buildings or paved attractions, a natural park is intended to protect open space and let the landscape play the starring role.

That means room for native plants, healthier habitats and everyday opportunities for neighbors to experience nature close to home.

Natural areas can help provide shade, support cleaner air and create welcoming conditions for pollinators, birds and other wildlife.

They also offer a living classroom where children and adults can observe how local ecosystems work.

Village officials have described several possible future enhancements, including native flowers, grasses and trees, as well as habitat features for butterflies, birds and other species.

Educational signs could eventually explain the wildlife, plants and environmental connections visitors see around them.

Those additions are possibilities for the site's development, not completed improvements.

The Garden Village Commission plans to continue exploring how the park can evolve while keeping its natural character at the center.

The dedication also recognized the teamwork behind the project.

Among those thanked for taking part were Village President Kevin Patrick, Village Manager Mike Rivas, Garden Village Commissioners, representatives of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, State Representative Diane Blair-Sherlock, State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton, the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce and village staff.

Residents who have ideas for the new park are encouraged to share them with the Garden Village Commission as planning continues.

The new sign lists park hours as 6 a.m. to sunset.

For families, walkers and curious neighbors, Sugar Creek Park offers something simple but meaningful: a chance to slow down and appreciate a little more of Villa Park’s outdoors.
