Villa Park Expects Car 321 Delivery in May 2027 |
Updated plans include a protective shelter and public viewing platform |

Villa Park’s plans for historic Car 321 now point to a May 2027 delivery, with shelter construction expected to follow through the summer.
The updated village timeline replaces earlier arrival expectations reported by the Ledger.
The 1914 Chicago Aurora & Elgin railcar will be displayed near the former Ardmore Avenue station along the Illinois Prairie Path.
Before transportation, roof repairs are planned to help protect the car from weather.
Restoration work includes exterior repairs and cleaning, securing and stabilizing the interior for future public viewing.
In September, trustees selected a concept featuring a depot-style metal shelter with masonry-wrapped columns, a viewing platform and paths connecting to the station and Prairie Path.
Steps at the platform’s ends would also provide seating for educational presentations and special events.
Additional plaza areas remain dependent on future funding.
Residents can participate through the commemorative brick and bench program, with applications available online and at village facilities.
The village says final placement details are still being developed.
May 2027 remains an expected delivery date, rather than a confirmed arrival day.

Already looked up the commemorative brick program. Would be a nice way to have the family name connected to something like this permanently.
My grandma used to talk about riding the CA&E when she was young. Having Car 321 right by the Prairie Path is going to mean a lot to a lot of families around here.
I'll believe it when I see it. Remember when they said it was coming sooner? Hoping they actually stick to this timeline.
May 2027 feels like forever away but at least they are moving forward with it. That railcar deserves a good home right here in Villa Park.
