Villa Park students have until Saturday, October 31, 2026, to enter two nationwide VFW-sponsored scholarship competitions through Villa Park VFW Post 2801.

This year's shared theme is “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”

Voice of Democracy welcomes students in grades 9–12 to produce an audio-recorded essay exploring the theme.

The top national award is a $35,000 scholarship.

Patriot’s Pen is a written essay competition for students in grades 6–8, with a top national award of $5,000.

Both competitions begin with local entries and offer opportunities for recognition at the post, district, state and national levels.

Students who want to participate should review the official competition rules, submission requirements and eligibility details before turning in their work.

DEADLINE: Saturday, October 31, 2026.

LOCATION: Villa Park VFW Post 2801, 39 E. St. Charles Road, Villa Park.

MORE INFORMATION: Contact the post at 630-834-8191 or visit the VFW youth scholarship information page linked in the original announcement.

These programs encourage students to develop their voices, learn about veterans’ experiences and take part in a longstanding tradition of civic education.
