Lombard, Illinois, is home to a unique mix of historic housing, including the Lustron Houses.

Developed after WWII, these steel-framed homes with porcelain-baked enamel tile were intended to provide low-maintenance living for returning GIs and their families.

Of the 2,500 built, many Lustron Houses still stand today due to their durable steel construction.

These relatively small homes feature built-in metal bookshelves and cupboards, but are not easily remodeled or expanded.

While some have been demolished to make way for larger homes, others remain in their original form.

Today, Lustron Houses have become collector's items, showcasing a piece of innovative post-WWII housing design.
