Lombard Earns Tree City USA Recognition for 36th Year

The Village of Lombard has once again been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, marking the 36th consecutive year the community has received this honor. The Village also earned its 29th Growth Award, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen and expand Lombard’s urban forest.

This achievement reflects the dedication of Lombard’s Forestry team, who care for more than 19,000 parkway trees across the community. Their work plays a vital role in preserving the tree canopy, supporting environmental health, and maintaining the natural beauty residents enjoy every day.

New Business Coming to Downtown Lombard with Improvement Grant Approval

Exciting news for Downtown Lombard! At the April 23 meeting, the Village of Lombard Board of Trustees approved a Downtown Improvement and Renovation Grant for a new business, MinMax Games, set to open at 1 S. Park Ave, in the old bank building.

MinMax Games, owned by Peter and Sam Kuhlman along with Eric Simmons, is a family-run business that has been operating in Addison since 2021. Their new Lombard location will occupy a 3,500-square-foot space, featuring a retail shop on the main floor and residential space above. The store will focus on tabletop miniatures and trading card gamesβ€”bringing a fun, community-centered hobby experience right to the heart of downtown.

To support the project, the Village approved a grant of up to $50,000 (or 50% of eligible project costs), which will go toward exterior and structural improvements like new awnings, brickwork, masonry, and tuckpointing.

In addition, the project may receive up to $25,310 in additional funding for ADA accessibility upgrades, including a new side entrance and an interior liftβ€”helping ensure the space is welcoming and accessible for all.

This investment is another step forward in enhancing Downtown Lombard and bringing unique, locally owned businesses into the community. Keep an eye out for MinMax Games as they prepare to open their doors!

Keeping Our Trails Beautiful 🌿

The Villa Park Community FUN Commission teamed up with the Illinois Prairie Path Corporation for their annual Trail Clean-Up on April 25β€”and the community showed up in a big way!

Volunteers gathered at the pavilion near the Villa Park Historical Museum, including State Rep. Diane Blair-Sherlock, before heading out to clean up the village’s stretch of the Illinois Prairie Path. Crews also collected litter along the Great Western Trail and in local parks.

A big thank you to Bob Wagner and Go Green Villa Park for providing biodegradable, plant-based waste bags and trash grabbers to support the effort.

It’s inspiring to see the community come together to keep our local trails clean, safe, and beautiful for everyone to enjoy!

Chili Lime Chicken Skewers with Mango Sauce

Fresh, vibrant, tropical flavors are exactly what I'm craving when summer hits, and these chicken skewers deliver big on those flavors!

With a simple chili-lime spice rub and a sweet mango dipping sauce, they are easy to prepare and cook on the grill. Serve with crispy grilled potatoes or grilled sweet potatoes, and you have yourself a meal!

Ingredients:

  • Chicken breast- cut into 1-inch cubes. You can swap for chicken thighs or pork tenderloin
  • Olive oil- to help the chicken brown and develop flavor on the grill
  • Spices- chili powder, brown sugar, and salt deliver a blend of sweet, savory and slightly spicy. You could also swap for fajita chicken seasoning
  • Lime juice- adds acid to balance and brighten the flavors of the spice rub
  • Veggies- bell peppers and onions are pictured, but feel free to swap them for your favorites: zucchini and mushrooms are two of my favorites

Mango sauce

  • Mango- cubed. See how to cut a mango
  • Lime- juiced to add some acidity and depth of flavor to the sauce
  • Brown sugar- add to taste; some mangoes are sweeter than others and may not need added sweetener
  • Water- start with 2 tablespoons to thin and add more as needed

Mango sauce

You will want to get the mango sauce prepped first because once you start grilling the chicken, you will need to keep an eye on it. Using an immersion or stand blender, blend together the mango, water, lime juice, and sugar. Taste and adjust the sugar as needed.

Prepping the chicken

Once coated in the mixture, you can start threading the chicken and vegetables onto skewers*. Alternate chicken with bell peppers and onions to create rainbow skewers.

*If you are using wooden skewers, be sure to soak them for 30 minutes before grilling; otherwise, they may burn and break on the grill.

Grilling the skewers:

Heat the barbecue to medium-high heat (400Β°F). Make sure it is nice and clean when starting, and brush with oil to prevent the skewers from sticking. Arrange the skewers 2 inches apart on the grill and cook with the lid down, turning every 2 minutes for a total of 10 minutes. At this point, you can check if your chicken is cooked through by inserting a digital thermometer into the thickest part of a chicken piece. When chicken registers 165Β°F, it is ready to come off the grill.
