🎉 Happy 156th Birthday, Maple Street Chapel! 🎉

🎉 Happy 156th Birthday, Maple Street Chapel! 🎉

We celebrate one of Lombard's most treasured landmarks — the historic Maple Street Chapel, dedicated on May 29, 1870. For 156 years, this beautiful Gothic Revival chapel has stood at the heart of our community, witnessing generations of weddings, celebrations, concerts, community gatherings, and local history.

More than just a historic building, Maple Street Chapel tells the story of Lombard itself. It once housed Lombard's first public library, welcomed the village's first kindergarten classes, and even served as a gathering place for community events throughout the years. Today, it remains a beloved symbol of our village's rich heritage.

Its iconic white steeple, original stained-glass windows, and timeless charm continue to make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Lilac Village. Thanks to the dedicated volunteers and preservationists who have worked tirelessly to protect this community treasure for future generations.

Join us in wishing Maple Street Chapel a very happy 156th birthday! ❤️

Glenbard East Softball Wins First Regional Title Since 2003

The Glenbard East Rams softball team captured its first regional championship in 23 years with a thrilling 6-5 victory over Lake Park in the IHSA Class 4A Elk Grove Regional on May 22.

The Rams improved to 21-4 on the season and advanced to the Bartlett Sectional after defeating Elk Grove 11-0 in the regional semifinal and then holding off Lake Park in the championship game.

Junior catcher Ally Amrhein scored two runs in the title game, while sophomore Emma Jaras drove in two runs. Junior pitcher Claire Bolda earned the win, and junior center fielder Althea Fitzgerald secured the final out with a key running catch.

In the semifinal, junior Lilly Carver powered the Rams with two home runs and four RBIs in the 11-0 victory over Elk Grove.

"This year our goal was a regional championship, so we are happy right now," said head coach Dawn Chantos.

Congratulations to the Rams on a historic season and bringing home Glenbard East's first regional plaque since 2003! 🥎🏆

Glenbard East's Finn Talbot Advances to State

Glenbard East senior Finn Talbot is headed to the IHSA Class 2A Boys Tennis State Meet for the fourth consecutive year after finishing second in singles at the Willowbrook Sectional.

Talbot dominated his first three matches, losing just one game before advancing to the sectional championship match. He earned the runner-up finish and secured one of four state-qualifying singles spots.

The Class 2A State Meet will be held this week in the northwest suburbs, with Palatine High School serving as the host site.

Congratulations to Finn on an outstanding achievement and four straight trips to the state tournament!

Willowbrook Baseball Eyes Regional Title

Despite dropping their final two regular-season games, the Willowbrook Warriors enter postseason play with an impressive 28-6 record and a West Suburban Gold Conference championship.

After starting the season 1-4, the Warriors put together a remarkable 27-game winning streak, including a perfect 18-0 conference record. Willowbrook is hosting an IHSA Class 4A Regional and opened postseason action this week against Maine West.

Senior Jory Crocker, junior Ben Swanson, and senior Alek Ramey helped lead the Warriors throughout the season. Willowbrook is the No. 1 seed in the Bartlett Sectional and hopes to continue its successful season on its home field.

Before the regular-season finale, longtime head coach Vic Wisner, who will retire at the end of the season, was honored by former players and supporters for his years of leadership with the program.

Montini Softball Wins Regional Championship

The Montini Catholic Broncos captured the IHSA Class 3A Elmwood Park Regional title with a dominant 11-0 victory over Elmwood Park on May 23.

Montini advanced to the Glenbard South Sectional after improving to 22-9 on the season. Sophomore Cameron Fox led the way, blasting two home runs, driving in three runs, and pitching a five-inning shutout with 13 strikeouts.

Sophomore Natalie Glosky went 3-for-3 with five RBIs, while freshman Brooke Wills and junior Aubry Raffen also contributed key hits in the championship win.

The Broncos now look to continue their postseason run in sectional play.

Montini's Sydney Gertsen Captures State Championship

Montini Catholic senior Sydney Gertsen added another remarkable achievement to her outstanding athletic career by winning the IHSA Class 2A state championship in the 3,200-meter run on May 23 at Eastern Illinois University.

Gertsen crossed the finish line in 10:08.43, earning the state title and finishing nearly three seconds ahead of the runner-up. She also earned a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run later that day.

Fellow Montini senior Ashlynn Lindt also had a strong showing at the state meet, placing seventh in the 3,200-meter run and eighth in the 1,600-meter run. Both athletes earned All-State honors in both events.

Gertsen's state track title comes just months after she won the IHSA Class 2A girls cross-country state championship last fall, further cementing her place among Illinois' top distance runners.

Congratulations to Sydney, Ashlynn, and the entire Montini track and field program on an outstanding season!

Local Athletes Advance to State Track & Field Meet

Several athletes from Willowbrook, Glenbard East, and Montini Catholic have qualified for this week's IHSA State Track & Field Championships in Charleston.

Willowbrook will send a strong group of competitors, led by senior Otis Powell in the high jump, Hayden Roscoe in the 300-meter hurdles, Evan Haworth in the 800-meter run, and distance runners Legend Alka and Miteku Branch in the 3,200-meter run. The Warriors also qualified in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relay events.

Glenbard East's 4x200 relay team of Mustafa Usmani, Michael Orive, Lucas Freese, and Ethan Monday earned a state berth by meeting the qualifying standard at the Lake Park Sectional.

Montini Catholic junior Nino Pesola qualified for the Class 2A state meet in the 1,600-meter run, while the Broncos' 4x800 relay team of Sean Buckley, Adriel Garcia, Gavin Conway, and Graham Reiser also advanced to state competition.

CA&E Car 321 Track Installation Complete in Villa Park

A major milestone has been reached in bringing historic Chicago Aurora & Elgin Car 321 to Villa Park!

The track that will serve as the permanent home for CA&E Car 321 has now been installed near Ardmore Station, thanks to a collaborative effort between volunteers from the Fox River Trolley Museum and the Village of Villa Park Public Works Department.

Volunteers worked tirelessly to install the rail, ties, gravel, tie plates, and joiner bars in preparation for the car's arrival later this summer from the Illinois Railway Museum. The project represents an important step in preserving local railroad history and honoring the legacy of the Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railway, which once served communities throughout the western suburbs.

Special care was taken to ensure historical accuracy, with original rail, period-correct joiners, date-appropriate ties, and authentic tie plates used throughout the installation. The attention to detail and dedication shown by everyone involved has resulted in a display that reflects the appearance and character of the original CA&E trackage.

The project would not have been possible without the partnership and support of the Village of Villa Park and its Public Works staff. Their commitment, along with countless volunteer hours, has helped preserve a unique piece of transportation history for future generations to enjoy.

Car 321 is expected to arrive at its new home later this summer, marking another exciting chapter in Villa Park's rich railroad heritage.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:

B) Lombard's first public library 📚

For the first 50 years after the chapel opened in 1870, a room inside Maple Street Chapel served as Lombard's very first public library. The chapel was also home to Lombard's first kindergarten class!

Bonus Trivia Answer:

Answer: True! The bell not only called people to Sunday services but also served as the community's fire alarm.

"Back in the 1800s, the most desirable seats in Maple Street Chapel weren't the front row—they were the pews closest to the heater!"
