September is National Hunger Action Month, and the Glen Ellyn community has an easy way to help neighbors facing food insecurity.

From September 10–17, Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center is collecting non-perishable food and toiletry items to benefit Glen House Food Pantry.

DATES: Thursday, September 10–Thursday, September 17, 2026
TIME: Regular business hours
LOCATION: Ackerman SFC, 800 St. Charles Road, Glen Ellyn

Residents are encouraged to pick up a few extra items during their next shopping trip and drop them off at Ackerman during the collection.

Because the pantry's needs can change, donors can check the current list of most-needed items before shopping.

Every donation helps fill the shelves and support local families right here in our community.

Fall fun is officially underway across the western suburbs!

Pumpkins, apple cider donuts, corn mazes, hayrides, orchards and fall festivals are filling the calendar from September through early November. Whether you're looking for a quick afternoon close to home or want to make a full day of it, the Lombard Lilac Ledger has rounded up some of our favorite fall destinations within driving distance of Lombard, Glen Ellyn and Villa Park.

Some are traditional pumpkin patches. Others have grown into full fall destinations with rides, animals, food, corn mazes and entertainment. And we've even included a pumpkin patch where you won't find a single real pumpkin!

Save this guide and come back to it all season long.

CLOSE TO HOME:

Cosley Zoo Pumpkin Fest — Wheaton

October 1–31
1356 N. Gary Ave., Wheaton

You don't have to travel far for fall fun. Cosley Zoo's annual Pumpkin Fest transforms the zoo into a seasonal destination throughout October, with thousands of pumpkins displayed across the lawn.

It's an especially nice choice for families with younger children or anyone looking for an easy fall outing close to home.

16th Annual Glass Pumpkin Patch — The Morton Arboretum

October 9–11 | 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle

Here's a completely different kind of pumpkin patch — and it's practically in our backyard!

The Morton Arboretum's 16th Annual Glass Pumpkin Patch returns with a spectacular display of more than 8,000 one-of-a-kind blown-glass pumpkins created by glass artists from around the country.

Visitors can browse and purchase pumpkins in traditional fall colors as well as unusual shapes and vibrant contemporary designs. Artists will also demonstrate how molten glass is transformed into these unique works of art, with glassblowing demonstrations throughout the weekend and additional flameworking demonstrations Saturday and Sunday.

The Glass Pumpkin Patch is located on the West Lawn near the Visitor Center and is included with regular Arboretum admission.

LLL Tip: This isn't your traditional pumpkin farm. It's part fall outing, part art show and a beautiful opportunity to visit the Arboretum as the leaves begin changing color.

Cantigny Fall Fest — Wheaton

September 26–27 | 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
1S151 Winfield Rd., Wheaton

Cantigny's two-day Fall Fest is another great option right in our backyard. The celebration includes a large vendor market, live music, garden tours, food trucks and children's activities including crafts, bounce houses and a petting zoo.

Festival admission is free, with a parking fee and additional charges for some activities.

Sonny Acres Farm Fall Festival — West Chicago

September 19–October 30
29W310 North Ave., West Chicago

A longtime western suburban fall tradition, Sonny Acres combines pumpkins with daytime hayrides, farm animals, amusement rides, seasonal food and entertainment.

For those who prefer their fall fun a little scarier, the farm also offers haunted attractions on select October nights.

Johansen Farms — Bolingbrook

September 15–October 31
710 W. Boughton Rd., Bolingbrook

Johansen Farms is especially geared toward families with younger children, with a children's zoo, corn maze, hayrides, train rides, giant slides, miniature golf and plenty of animals.

Don't need all the attractions? Families can also visit the pumpkin patch and open market area without purchasing admission to the children's zoo. Stop in for pumpkins, fall decorations, apple cider donuts and other seasonal treats.

Abbey Farms Pumpkin Daze — Aurora

September 19–November 1
2855 Hart Rd., Aurora

Abbey Farms' Pumpkin Daze offers a full day of fall fun with acres of pumpkins, a large corn maze, hayrides, farm animals and an activity area.

Keller's Farmstand Fall Festivities — Oswego

September 12–October 25
2500 Johnson Rd., Oswego

Keller's Oswego farm combines several favorite fall traditions in one destination, including apple picking, a U-pick pumpkin patch and weekend Fall Festivities.

Good to know: Keller's has multiple locations, but the Oswego farm is the location offering the U-pick pumpkin patch and Fall Festivities.

Bronkberry Farms — Plainfield

18061 Bronk Rd., Plainfield

Bronkberry offers a smaller farm experience for families who don't necessarily want a huge amusement-style fall festival. Look for pumpkins, apples, mums, seasonal treats, hayrides and special fall events.

Week 4 Local High School Sports Roundup.

Rams, Raiders, Hilltoppers, Warriors & Broncos — September 8–12

It was another busy week for our five local high schools, with big football wins, strong performances on the volleyball court and golf course, and girls' flag football continuing its fall season.

GLENBARD EAST RAMS

Football: The Rams put together their biggest offensive performance of the young season Friday night, rolling past Elmwood Park 55–0. It was Glenbard East’s second consecutive shutout after defeating Fenton 48–0 the previous week.

The Rams now turn their attention to a big local matchup against Glenbard South on Friday, Sept. 18 in Lombard.

Girls Volleyball: Glenbard East opened the week with a conference victory over Fenton, winning 26–24, 25–15 on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer: The Rams picked up a tight 1–0 victory over Glenbard North on Thursday.

Boys Golf: Glenbard East posted a 167 Tuesday to defeat Fenton (169) and Elmwood Park (192). On Wednesday, the Rams finished at 171 in a close match with Riverside-Brookfield.

Girls Golf: The Rams were also active this week, including a match against the U46 co-op squad.

Girls Flag Football: The Rams traveled to Bartlett Friday as their flag football season continued. Another local showdown is coming this week when Glenbard East meets Glenbard South.

GLENBARD SOUTH RAIDERS

Football: Glenbard South had an impressive Friday night of its own, defeating West Chicago 49–6. The Raiders now head into one of the area's most interesting games of the week — Glenbard South at Glenbard East on Friday, Sept. 18.

Girls Volleyball: The Raiders swept Elmwood Park 25–15, 25–14 Tuesday and continued their strong week Saturday with a 25–22, 25–9 victory over Bremen in the Glenbard South Raider Triangular.

Boys Golf: Glenbard South defeated Montini on Wednesday, shooting 162 to Montini's 169.

Girls Golf: The Raiders posted a 184–217 victory over West Chicago Wednesday.

Girls Flag Football: Glenbard South faced West Aurora Wednesday, falling 22–0. The Raiders have another busy week ahead, including games against St. Francis and Glenbard East.

GLENBARD WEST HILLTOPPERS

Football: Glenbard West faced a tough Downers Grove North squad Friday and fell 24–14. The Hilltoppers continue through a challenging early-season schedule.

Girls Volleyball: It was an excellent week for Glenbard West. The Hilltoppers defeated Lyons 25–23, 25–22 Tuesday and followed that with a three-set victory over St. Charles North Thursday, 21–25, 25–13, 25–21.

Boys Soccer: Glenbard West picked up a strong 3–1 win over Lake Park Thursday.

Boys Golf: The Hilltoppers continued to impress on the course. After shooting 150 against Hinsdale Central Tuesday, Glenbard West edged Oak Park-River Forest 149–150 Thursday.

Girls Golf: Glenbard West shot 150 Wednesday to defeat Willowbrook (190) and followed with a narrow 183–184 win over Downers Grove South Thursday.

WILLOWBROOK WARRIORS

Football: Willowbrook ran into a strong Downers Grove South team Friday night, falling 42–7.

Girls Flag Football: One of Willowbrook's biggest performances of the week came from the girls flag football team. The Warriors shut out Leyden 53–0 Thursday, continuing the growth of one of Illinois high school sports' newest varsity offerings.

Boys Cross Country: Willowbrook recorded a strong 15–49 victory over Addison Trail Tuesday.

Boys Golf: The Warriors defeated Leyden 171–180 Tuesday. On Wednesday, Willowbrook shot 147 against Downers Grove South's 142, then finished Thursday tied with Hinsdale South at 159.

Boys Soccer: Willowbrook fell to Lyons 5–2 Thursday.

Girls Golf: The Warriors shot 190 in Wednesday's match against Glenbard West.

Girls Volleyball: Willowbrook competed Saturday at the Leyden Eagle Invite, where Hersey edged the Warriors 26–24, 25–21.

MONTINI CATHOLIC BRONCOS

Football: The game of the week may have belonged to Montini. The Broncos went on the road and outlasted Nazareth Academy 47–42 Friday night in a high-scoring battle between two highly regarded programs.

Girls Volleyball: After falling to Marist Tuesday, Montini bounced back quickly. The Broncos defeated Wheaton Academy 25–16, 25–21 Wednesday and University of Chicago 25–10, 25–18 Thursday.

Boys Golf: Montini shot 160 Tuesday against Timothy Christian, followed with a 169 against Glenbard South Wednesday and then defeated St. Edward 155–219 Thursday.

Boys Soccer: The Broncos faced a difficult Mt. Carmel squad Thursday, falling 7–0.

Both teams enter the matchup coming off convincing Week 4 victories — Glenbard East's 55–0 win over Elmwood Park and Glenbard South's 49–6 victory over West Chicago.

From 1908 through 1940, Sears, Roebuck and Co. sold complete house-building kits through its catalogs. Known as Sears Modern Homes, these kits included nearly everything needed to construct a house—from lumber, nails, flooring and roofing to bathroom fixtures and plumbing supplies.

The materials were shipped by railroad boxcar and then typically transported by truck to the building site. An average Sears Modern Home kit contained approximately 25 tons of materials and more than 30,000 individual parts, all accompanied by detailed construction instructions. The buyer was generally responsible for excavating and preparing the foundation.

The Villa Park Historical Society’s exhibit explores these fascinating catalog homes and the important role they played in the community’s development. It is believed that Villa Park may contain more than 70 Sears homes, although only 11 have been authenticated and awarded honorary “Sears Catalog Home” plaques by the VPHPC.

The exhibit also highlights the work of Rebecca L. Hunter, a nationally recognized Sears kit-home expert, author and researcher.

Visitors can discover how families once selected their dream homes from a catalog—and how pieces of this distinctive architectural history remain part of Villa Park today.

Meet Lewes: A Loving Puppy Searching for His Best Friend

Say hello to Lewes, an affectionate mixed-breed puppy who is ready to find a family of his own!

Lewes is one of eight puppies born around June 4, 2026. The litter was rescued in Arkansas, where shelter volunteers worked hard to begin the puppies’ vaccinations and arrange transportation north in hopes of giving each one a brighter future.

No one knows exactly which breeds make up Lewes's family tree, but one thing is certain: he is a loving puppy who wants nothing more than to become someone’s best friend.

Lewes is a medium-sized mixed breed with a white coat and tan, yellow or fawn markings. He is expected to weigh between approximately 26 and 60 pounds when fully grown. His vaccinations are current, and he is reported to be good with children and other dogs.

Could Lewes be the missing member of your family?

To apply to meet or adopt Lewes, visit www.4Paws4U4Ever.com and select “How to Adopt.” You can also meet available pets at an upcoming adoption event.
