Village of Lombard Seeking Nominees for Senior Man and Woman of the Year |
The Village of Lombard is accepting nominations for its 21st Annual Senior Man and Woman of the Year Awards, recognizing older residents who make a positive impact through volunteerism, community service and helping others.
Nominees must be 65 or older and live within the incorporated limits of Lombard. Residents submitting a nomination should include a brief statement of 50 words or less explaining why the person deserves recognition, along with a short biography.
“We all know people in our community who generously give their time and energy to help others,” said Trustee Jessie Hammersmith, chair of the Community Relations Committee. “This is a simple way to recognize a deserving senior and let them know that their contributions to Lombard are seen and appreciated.”
Nominations are due by 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2026. The Community Relations Committee will select the recipients on Sept. 21, and the 2026 Senior Man and Woman of the Year will be announced publicly. Award recipients will also be invited to ride in the 2027 Lilac Parade.

Glen Ellyn residents can add locally beneficial plants to their landscapes through the annual Native Tree and Shrub Sale. More than two dozen native species are available, with prices ranging from $27 to $50.

SALT: Seniors and Law Enforcement Together |
Local seniors are invited to the next SALT meeting, a partnership between the Villa Park Police Department and older residents focused on crime prevention, safety awareness and educational opportunities.
Coffee and pastries, provided by the Villa Park Police Department, will be served from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Village Trustee Kozar will then present a program explaining the differences between wills and trusts. Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m., courtesy of the Senior Concerns Commission.

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company will host an information night for adults interested in becoming volunteer firefighters. Attendees can learn about the application process, training, responsibilities, and benefits of serving the community. No previous firefighting experience is required; the company provides the necessary training, equipment, and support.
Applicants must: Be at least 21 years old. Hold a valid driver’s license. Live within one mile of the Glen Ellyn service area or be willing to relocate.

Over the past several weeks, I have heard concerns about Coffee with the Board, including scheduling conflicts, trustee participation and uncertainty about whether the meetings will take place.
Following our August 10 Village Board discussion, trustees were asked to sign up for the remaining Coffee with the Board dates through December. We did not receive enough commitments to hold the September, November and December meetings.
I do not want to eliminate this valuable opportunity for residents to speak informally with their elected officials. Instead, I am proposing a new monthly program called Evening with the Board.
Under the proposal, Evening with the Board would take place on the fourth Monday of each month from 6:00–7:00 p.m. at Villa Park Village Hall, immediately before the regularly scheduled Village Board meeting. Read More... |
Residents in Villa Park, Lombard and other communities served by School District 45 will have several opportunities this month to learn more about the district’s November referendum as District 45 continues a series of public Town Hall meetings.
Voters will decide the referendum during the November 3, 2026 General Election. The proposal is a limiting-rate referendum, meaning the additional revenue would be available for the district’s ongoing operating expenses rather than being restricted to specific construction projects.
What Will Voters Decide?The ballot question asks voters whether District 45's limiting rate under the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law should increase by 0.2670 percentage points above the limiting rate for levy year 2025. If approved, the district says the increase would generate approximately $4.4 million in additional revenue each year. The ballot language identifies instructional programming, student support and services, operations and maintenance, and safety and security improvements among the purposes for the additional funding.

The Villa Park–Lombard Kiwanis Club has announced a new date for its Cruisin’ for a Cause Car Scavenger Hunt.
The event will take place on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, beginning and ending at Albright Middle School, 1110 S. Villa Ave. in Villa Park. Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m., and the hunt starts at 6 p.m.
Participants will travel throughout Villa Park and Lombard, solving clues, completing activities and visiting local destinations before returning to the finish line with their answers.
The entry fee is $25 per adult age 18 or older. Children under 18 may participate in the car for free. Registration includes scavenger hunt participation, refreshments at the finish and entries for prizes. Wilson Ave., to mark 25 years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that day, as well as the first responders and others who demonstrated extraordinary courage and sacrifice in the aftermath of the attacks. “Twenty-five years may have passed, but the lives lost and the acts of courage we witnessed on September 11 remain with us,” said Lombard Fire Chief Rick Sander. “Coming together as a community gives us an opportunity to remember, reflect, and honor all those who were impacted by that day.” September 11 is observed nationally as Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging Americans to remember those who lost their lives and honor their memory through service to others. LOMBARD — HELEN PLUM LIBRARYShow Your Library Card & Save at Lombard Businesses Helen Plum Library is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month by encouraging residents to put their library cards to work around town. Throughout September, Helen Plum Library cardholders can show their library card at participating Lombard businesses to receive special discounts and offers. Residents can simply present their library card at participating locations to receive the advertised deal. Refer-a-Friend Prize Drawing There’s another reason to encourage friends and neighbors to get a library card this month. When a Lombard resident signs up for a new Helen Plum Library card during September after being referred by a current cardholder, both the new cardholder and the person who referred them will be entered into a drawing for a $15 gift card to one of the library’s Show Your Card discount partners. Library cards are available to residents who live within the Helen Plum Library District. Non-resident cards are also available for a fee.

On Wednesday, September 9, families can enjoy Family Storytime at 9:30 a.m. and Toddler Storytime at 10:30 a.m., while Drop-In Studio 411 is available from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. English Language Learning classes return that evening from 6–8:30 p.m.
Friday, September 11 includes Drop-In Studio 411 from 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Construction Crew for young children from 10:30–11:15 a.m., and Board Game Night from 5–8 p.m.
On Monday, September 14, the library offers Family and Preschool Storytimes, Intro to Canva from 10–11:30 a.m., Drop-In Studio 411 from 1:30–5 p.m., Drop-In Notary Services from 4–6 p.m., and an Evening Family Storytime at 6:30 p.m. Teen Make @ Home Amate Painting kits will also be available while supplies last.
Some programs require registration and may fill quickly.
GLEN ELLYN — GLEN ELLYN PUBLIC LIBRARYGlen Ellyn Public Library is also celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month with its “Be a Library Star!” campaign. The library has set a goal of adding 250 new cardholders during September. New cardholders receive a 10% Cafe coupon and an entry into a weekly prize drawing.
Programs This Week On Tuesday, September 8, Storytime in the Park takes place from 10:30–11 a.m. The library will also host Memory Cafe from 1–2 p.m., providing an opportunity for people experiencing memory changes and their care partners to socialize and participate in activities.
Young creators in grades 3–8 can learn about the library’s large-format printer during Create Your Own Poster from 4–5 p.m. Storytime in the Park returns Wednesday, September 9, from 10:30–11 a.m., and the Friends of the Library will hold a book sort from 10 a.m.–noon.
Also beginning September 9 is the library’s Monthly Make: Machine-Embroidered Hoop Art through The Workshop. Participants can reserve a project kit and schedule a time to work on the self-guided makerspace project. Registration may be required for select programs.
VILLA PARK — VILLA PARK PUBLIC LIBRARYVilla Park Public Library joins libraries across the country in celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month throughout September, while offering several standout programs for adults and families this week.
Morbid History — Murder Mystery Edition! On Tuesday, September 8, from 6:30–7:30 p.m., performer Lorissa Julianus presents an evening of intriguing true stories featuring historical murders, high-society whodunits and Old Hollywood scandals. Registration is required.

On Thursday, September 10, from 6:30–7:30 p.m., Desueño Dance will introduce participants to the foundations of Bachata, the popular dance originating in the Dominican Republic. No partner is necessary, and registration is requested.
Fall Toddler Time Begins Villa Park Public Library’s fall Toddler Time begins Monday, September 14. Sessions are offered from 10:30–11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.–noon and feature stories, music, rhyming games and playtime for walking children through age 3 accompanied by an adult.

Week of August 31 – September 6Fall sports are in full swing at our area high schools, and it was a busy week for athletes from Glenbard East, Glenbard South, Glenbard West, Willowbrook and Montini Catholic. From a perfect weekend on the football field to volleyball tournaments, soccer, cross country, golf and girls flag football, here’s a look at some of the highlights from the past week.
FOOTBALLWhat a weekend for our local football teams — all five schools we follow came away with victories! Glenbard South rolled past Ridgewood, 61–13, giving the Raiders a convincing road victory. Glenbard East earned a dominant 48–0 shutout over Fenton, giving the Rams their first victory of the season and a strong start to conference play. Glenbard West defeated Oak Park-River Forest, 39–21, on Saturday. Ace Harris helped lead the Hilltoppers with 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Montini Catholic came out on top in one of the weekend's closer contests, defeating Marist, 35–28. Willowbrook picked up another win for Villa Park, defeating Leyden, 26–9. That made it a perfect 5–0 football weekend for the five schools covered by the Lombard Lilac Ledger.
GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALLGirls flag football is underway across the area, and the rapidly growing IHSA sport is becoming another one to watch this fall.
Willowbrook continued an outstanding start to its season Saturday with a commanding 51–0 victory over Elk Grove. The win moved the Warriors to 6–0, keeping their perfect season intact. Allyson Rovansek was selected as Willowbrook's Player of the Game. The strong start follows a remarkable 2025 season in which Willowbrook finished 22–1 and placed third in the state, making the Warriors one of the programs to watch again this fall.
Glenbard South split a pair of games during the week. The Raiders fell to Lake Park 18–0 on Thursday before bouncing right back Friday with an impressive 25–0 shutout of West Chicago.
Glenbard East faced Oswego East Thursday, falling 43–0. The Rams finished the week with a 2–2 overall record and will look to get back in the win column as conference play continues.
Glenbard West is also competing in girls flag football this season, with the Hilltoppers continuing their schedule this week. Girls flag football will remain part of our weekly sports coverage throughout the fall season.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALLIt was a busy tournament week for several of our local volleyball programs.
Glenbard West continued an impressive start to the season. The Hilltoppers swept Downers Grove South during the week and entered the weekend among the area's hottest teams.
Willowbrook had a strong showing at its home tournament, earning victories over Glenbard South, Coal City, Trinity and Addison Trail. The Warriors dominated Addison Trail, 25–11, 25–11, before Metea Valley stopped Willowbrook in two sets.
Glenbard South also had a packed tournament schedule. The Raiders recorded wins over Coal City and Trinity on Friday before falling to Willowbrook. On Saturday, South defeated Addison Trail in three sets before falling to Metea Valley.
Montini Catholic picked up a two-set victory over Deerfield during the week. Avalyn DeKeyser recorded 13 assists and five digs, while Hope Garland contributed six kills, eight digs and two aces. At Saturday's Evergreen Park Invitational, Montini defeated host Evergreen Park 25–16, 25–19 before falling to St. Laurence 25–11, 25–18.
Glenbard East also saw tournament action, including matches against Lake Zurich and Maine South. The Rams fell to Maine South in a close match, 25–22, 25–23.
BOYS SOCCER
Glenbard West put together an excellent week on the soccer field. The Hilltoppers defeated Glenbrook South 2–1 and followed that with a 2–0 victory over Prospect, advancing to the championship game of the Jim Wolter Titan Invitational. Stevenson handed Glenbard West its first loss of the season in the championship, defeating the Hilltoppers 2–0. West finished the weekend with a strong 5–1 record.
Glenbard East also picked up a notable Saturday victory, defeating Wheaton Warrenville South 3–1.
Boys soccer schedules are also underway at Glenbard South, Willowbrook and Montini as the fall season continues.
CROSS COUNTRYLocal runners were busy at several large invitationals over the weekend.
At the Fenton Kurtz Early Bird Invitational, the Montini boys finished third with 92 points, while Glenbard West finished fourth with 111 points.
On the girls side at Fenton, Montini finished seventh with 208 points.
The Glenbard West girls competed at the Hinsdale Central Red Devil Invitational and finished seventh in a strong 20-team field. At the Lyons Mike Kuharic Invitational, the Willowbrook boys finished eighth, while Glenbard East finished 20th.
The Glenbard East girls also competed at the Lyons meet and finished 12th.
BOYS GOLFOur local golfers were busy on the course as well.
At the Glenbard East Ram Invitational, Glenbard South finished fifth with a team score of 358.
Glenbard West finished eighth with a 367, while host Glenbard East finished 16th.
Stevenson won the tournament with a team score of 303. Glenbard West also had a strong showing at the Lyons Quad, shooting a team score of 297 to finish second, only four strokes behind Lyons' winning 293. The Hilltoppers finished ahead of both Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North.
A BUSY FALL SEASON IS UNDERWAYWith football, girls flag football, volleyball, boys soccer, cross country, golf, tennis, swimming, and other fall sports now underway, there is plenty to follow across our five local high schools.
The Lombard Lilac Ledger will continue following Glenbard East, Glenbard South, Glenbard West, Willowbrook and Montini Catholic throughout the fall season, highlighting scores, team accomplishments and standout performances from our local student-athletes each week.

Holton was born in late May 2026.
All cats & kittens are up to date on all age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipped, dewormed, fixed, and tested FeLV/FIV negative. All kittens are living in foster homes in DuPage County and arrangements will be made to meet them after a brief application is reviewed.
The adoption fee is a $110 per cat donation to Feral Fixers. Discounted adoption fee if two cats are adopted together: $175 for a pair. A contract will be required at the time of adoption.
