School Bells Are Ringing: What Local Families and Drivers Need to Know |
Back-to-school season is underway across Lombard, Glen Ellyn and Villa Park, with local students returning to classrooms on different dates throughout August.
Glenbard District 87 kicked things off Aug. 12, followed by DuPage High School District 88 on Aug. 17.
Glen Ellyn District 41 and DuPage District 45 begin Aug. 19, CCSD 89 starts Aug. 20, and Lombard District 44 begins Aug. 26.
As students return, drivers are reminded to slow down and watch carefully for school buses, bicyclists, and children crossing streets. In Lombard, the school-zone speed limit is 20 mph when children are present.

School District 45 will host a Referendum Town Hall Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10–11:30 a.m. at Jackson Middle School, 301 W. Jackson St. in Villa Park, giving residents an opportunity to learn more about the district’s November referendum and ask questions. District 45 is seeking a 26.7-cent limiting-rate increase on the Nov. 3 ballot. The district says the proposal would generate approximately $4.4 million annually and estimates the impact on a home valued at $350,000 at approximately $299 per year, or about $25 per month. The proposal follows District 45’s March referendum, which was defeated by 193 votes, with 51.72% voting against and 48.28% voting in favor. District officials say the additional funding would help avoid further reductions and support programs and services for students. The District 45 Board of Education will also meet Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the District 45 Board Room, 255 W. Vermont St. in Villa Park. Major Transformation Underway at Glenbard East High School |
Major construction continues at Glenbard East High School in Lombard, where one of the most significant transformations of the nearly 70-year-old campus is now underway.
Current work includes several major additions, including a new administrative area with a secure visitor entrance and relocated main office, an expanded cafeteria, and a new two-story learning commons.
The improvements extend well beyond what can be seen from outside. Plans also include updated classrooms and science labs, replacement exterior window systems, improved student support spaces, gym renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and additional improvements throughout the existing building.
More than $90 million is budgeted for improvements at Glenbard East as part of Glenbard District 87’s 10-year Facility Master Plan. Gilbane is serving as construction manager, with Wold Architects as architect of record.
Construction on the building additions began in October 2025 and is expected to continue through August 2027, with the work being completed in phases while the school remains open and operational.
For students, staff, families, and the Lombard community, the changes represent a major investment in the future of Glenbard East — and there is still much more work ahead. |
Montini Catholic High School student Gavin Conway of Lombard has been awarded the school’s 2026 Robert Huntoon Memorial Scholarship in recognition of his excellence in mathematics. Conway, who will enter his senior year this fall, received the honor earlier this spring during Montini Catholic’s Math Awards. The annual scholarship recognizes a student entering senior year who demonstrates outstanding achievement, curiosity and dedication in mathematics. The scholarship honors former Montini Catholic Math Department Chair Robert Huntoon, whose contributions helped shape the school’s mathematics program. Huntoon founded the Bronco Math Team and developed the idea for Montini’s annual Math Contest, encouraging generations of students to embrace problem-solving, academic competition and mathematical excellence. The GPS Parent Series will welcome developmental psychologist and author Dr. David Yeager for a virtual program Thursday, Aug. 20. “Start the School Year Strong: The Science of Motivating Young People” will be streamed at noon and 7 p.m. Yeager will discuss research-based strategies for motivating people ages 10 to 25, including ways parents, caregivers and educators can foster resilience, personal accountability and a stronger sense of purpose. Yeager is a psychology professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the author of “10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People.” The program is free, open to the public and does not require registration. The Lombard Historical Society’s 2026 50/50 Split the Pot Raffle is underway, giving one lucky winner the chance to take home half of the total raffle pot. Riot Cookies Co. to lead Villa Park decorating workshop |
Young bakers can learn the basics of cookie decorating during “Camping Adventures,” a hands-on class presented by Riot Cookies Co. Participants will decorate three to six camping-themed sugar cookies using royal icing. An experienced baker will demonstrate techniques such as outlining, flooding and adding decorative details. All supplies will be provided. The class is designed for children ages 8 to 12. Enrollment is limited to 10 participants, with at least five required. In order to accommodate the anticipated large crowd size, the concert stage will be located just west of the intersection of St. Charles Road and Main Street. Beginning at 3:00 p.m., St. Charles will be closed to through traffic from Elizabeth St. to Main St., with a complete closure of St. Charles at S Lincoln Ave. to Main Street. One-way traffic will be in place on St. Charles Rd from Elizabeth St to S Lincoln Ave and on S. Lincoln Ave towards Michael McGuire Dr.
Concert-goers aged 21 or older with proper identification will be able to purchase alcohol from participating licensed businesses for consumption outdoors within the defined concert area. No outside alcohol will be permitted.
Parking will be available in Metra commuter lots. Free crafts and activities will be available at Kids’ Corner, and popcorn will be available for purchase from Lombard Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, with all profits benefitting Lombard’s Shop-With-A-Cop program.
The concert is subject to weather conditions, and there will not be an alternative location or rainout date. Any updates pertaining to the concert will be made on the Village of Lombard’s website and social media pages.

One of a litter of six that was born around 3/21/26 and taken to the Corinth Alcon Animal Shelter in Mississippi. Some wonderful folks at the shelter found a ride up North with prayers that we will each find a loving home and wonderful family. I am a little timid but ever so sweet.
