REMINDER: DuPage County Property Taxes Due Today- Sept. 1 |
Tuesday, September 1 DuPage County property owners are reminded that the second installment of 2025 property taxes, payable in 2026, is due Tuesday, September 1.
Property owners should make sure their payment is submitted by the deadline to avoid late-payment penalties.
Payments can be made through the DuPage County Treasurer's Office using available online, mail or in-person payment options. If your property taxes are paid through a mortgage escrow account, check with your mortgage provider if you have questions about whether payment has been scheduled. |
Glen Ellyn Library Moves Forward With Search for New Director |
The Glen Ellyn Public Library is moving forward with its search for a new executive director following the announced retirement of Director Dawn Bussey.
The library's Executive Director Search Committee was scheduled to meet Monday, Aug. 31, with Bradbury Miller Associates, a firm specializing in leadership recruitment for libraries and mission-driven organizations. The Library Board approved a $31,000 contract with the firm in July.
The search committee has identified several priorities for the library's next leader, including building strong relationships with staff and the community, developing employees, maintaining the library's facilities and finances, and working closely with the Library Foundation and Friends groups.
The search process began after Bussey submitted her retirement notice in May. Library staff and community organizations are also expected to have opportunities for input as the search progresses. |
12th Annual Love Your Neighbor Day Needs Volunteers |
The Christian Church of Villa Park is looking for additional volunteers for the 12th Annual Love Your Neighbor Day! This is a community service event that brings together volunteers from local churches and the community to assist neighbors in need.
Currently, 41 homeowners have applied for help, and they need at least 100 more volunteers.
This is a one-day service event held in Lombard and Villa Park. They solicit applications from homeowners in need of exterior assistance, then line up volunteers to do the work. They receive grants and contributions to cover the costs of materials and supplies for the work they do for homeowners, so homeowners don't have to pay anything if they can't afford it.

The Lombard Historical Society’s 2026 50/50 Split the Pot Raffle is underway, giving one lucky winner the chance to take home half of the total raffle pot. Village of Lombard Seeking Nominees for Senior Man and Woman of the Year |
The Village of Lombard is accepting nominations for its 21st Annual Senior Man and Woman of the Year Awards, recognizing older residents who make a positive impact through volunteerism, community service and helping others.
Nominees must be 65 or older and live within the incorporated limits of Lombard. Residents submitting a nomination should include a brief statement of 50 words or less explaining why the person deserves recognition, along with a short biography.
“We all know people in our community who generously give their time and energy to help others,” said Trustee Jessie Hammersmith, chair of the Community Relations Committee. “This is a simple way to recognize a deserving senior and let them know that their contributions to Lombard are seen and appreciated.”
Nominations are due by 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2026. The Community Relations Committee will select the recipients on Sept. 21, and the 2026 Senior Man and Woman of the Year will be announced publicly. Award recipients will also be invited to ride in the 2027 Lilac Parade.

Christian Church of Villa Park and Disciples Food Pantry Planning a New Home |
The Christian Church of Villa Park is preparing to move to a new location at 507 E. St. Charles Road in Villa Park. Once a move-in date is confirmed, the church plans to invite the community to a grand opening celebration.
Most importantly, the church’s Disciples Food Pantry will move to the new location and continue serving local families. The weekly drive-up pantry currently operates on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. On average, it serves 263 households each month and provides food assistance to between 568 and 1,137 individuals.
Church leaders expressed gratitude for the local businesses and community members whose generous donations help keep the pantry stocked and make this important outreach possible. Additional information about the move, the pantry’s transition and the church’s grand opening will be announced once dates are finalized. |
Glen Ellyn Park District Native Tree & Shrub Sale |
Glen Ellyn residents can add locally beneficial plants to their landscapes through the annual Native Tree and Shrub Sale. More than two dozen native species are available, with prices ranging from $27 to $50.

Nordstrom Last Chance at Yorktown Center Closes Sept. 1 |
Nordstrom will permanently close its Last Chance store at Yorktown Center in Lombard on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The clearance store, located at 100 Yorktown Shopping Center, sells deeply discounted merchandise returned to or removed from Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations. The company attributed the closure to improvements in inventory management that reduced the need for the Last Chance location.
According to an Illinois WARN notice filed Aug. 7, the closure will affect 101 employees. The layoffs are scheduled to take effect Oct. 5. Nordstrom said it will assist affected employees and help interested workers explore other positions within the company. The retailer plans to continue serving area customers through nearby Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations and its online shopping channels. |

Villa Park Police Step Up Labor Day Safety Enforcement |
The Villa Park Police Department is joining law-enforcement agencies statewide for the Labor Day impaired-driving and seat-belt enforcement campaign. Officers will increase enforcement as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” initiatives. Drivers are reminded to plan ahead, designate a sober driver and ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled. Villa Park Police encourages residents to celebrate responsibly and help keep local roads safe throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend. |
DuPage High School District 88 Superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente presented details of the district’s proposed $118 million bond referendum during the Aug. 20 Lombard Village Board meeting. The referendum, which will appear on the November ballot, would fund improvements at Willowbrook and Addison Trail high schools. District officials say the projects would address safety and security, required life-safety work, accessibility, aging infrastructure, and improvements to career and technical education, performing arts, and athletic spaces. Barbanente noted that more than 20 percent of District 88 students live in Lombard. She also said the proposal is structured so it would not create a net increase in the district’s bond-related tax rate because bonds approved in 2007 are scheduled to be paid off after the 2026 levy year. Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, riders of Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes must be at least 15, while Class 3 riders must be at least 16. Low-speed e-bikes remain permitted on streets, bike lanes and paths, but not sidewalks. E-bikes and e-motos capable of exceeding 28 mph will be treated as motor-driven cycles and require a driver’s license, title, registration and insurance. High-speed scooters, electric skateboards and electric unicycles will be limited to 28 mph, prohibited on sidewalks and restricted to approved roads, bike lanes and paths. All covered devices will be banned from sidewalks and capped at 28 mph on roads, bike lanes, and paths. The law also sets minimum age requirements — 15 for Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes, and 16 for Class 3 e-bikes and other high-powered devices. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued a disaster declaration following the severe storms and tornadoes that impacted the region on July 27. Homeowners, renters, businesses and certain nonprofit organizations in DuPage County may be eligible for low-interest disaster loans to help cover losses not fully covered by insurance. Applications for physical property damage are due Oct. 19, while economic injury applications are due May 18, 2027. District 45 to Host Referendum Town Hall Sept. 2 |
District 45 will host a community town hall on Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at North Elementary School, 150 W. Sunset Drive in Villa Park.
The meeting will give residents an opportunity to learn more about the “Strengthen 45” referendum appearing on the Nov. 3 ballot. District officials will present the proposal, review supporting information and answer questions from community members.
The referendum asks voters to consider a 26.7-cent increase in the district’s tax rate per $100 of equalized assessed value. According to District 45, the measure would generate approximately $4.4 million in additional annual operating revenue. The estimated impact on a home with a $350,000 market value would be approximately $299 per year, or about $25 per month.
District officials say the additional revenue would help avoid deeper academic cuts, maintain reasonable class sizes and restore recently reduced programs, including reading support, advanced academics, fine arts, clubs and intramural activities.
The town hall follows the District 45 Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend the town hall, review the proposal and bring questions before voting in November.

September is Library Card Sign-Up MonthVilla Park Public Library is joining libraries across the country in celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month. Residents are encouraged to discover everything a library card can unlock, including books, movies, digital resources, study spaces, book clubs, classes and special programs.
Young at HeartWednesday, September 2 | 7–8:15 p.m. Adults who still enjoy great young adult and children’s literature can join the library’s Young at Heart book discussion group. September’s selection is On the Wings of la Noche by Vanessa L. Torres. Registration is required.
Teen HangoutWednesday, September 2 | 7–8 p.m. High school students can stop by the library to hang out with friends, play games and make crafts. No registration is required.
Once I Had an Old BanjoThursday, September 3 | 7–8:15 p.m. Enjoy an evening of live musical storytelling exploring the history and evolution of one of America’s most recognizable instruments. The program combines songs with stories about the banjo’s history, from its early traditions through old-time mountain music and the musicians who helped shape its distinctive sound. Registration is required.
Music TogetherFriday, September 4 | 10:45–11:30 a.m. Families can start Friday morning with singing, movement and musical activities during Music Together, an internationally recognized early-childhood music program. The program is hosted by Dan, SLP, from Easterseals. It is a drop-in event, and registration is not required.
Coming September 8Anime fans can gather for Anime Alliance from 4–5:30 p.m. The program will feature anime, button-making and more. Registration is required.
Adults looking for something a little mysterious can attend Morbid History: Murder Mystery Edition from 6:30–7:30 p.m. Performer Lorissa Julianus will share true tales involving historical mysteries, high-society scandals and unusual crimes. Registration is required.
Labor Day Reminder: Villa Park Public Library will be closed Monday, September 7.

The fall sports season got underway with a busy opening week for Glenbard East, Glenbard West, Glenbard South, Montini Catholic and Willowbrook. Local fall sports moved into full swing this week, with football, boys soccer, girls volleyball, flag football, cross country and golf competition across the area.
Football:Glenbard East The Rams fell to Plainfield North 21–0 on Friday. Glenbard East is 0–2. Glenbard West The Hilltoppers lost a thriller to St. Rita, 36–35. St. Rita scored late and converted a two-point attempt with 42 seconds remaining. Glenbard West is 1–1. Glenbard South The Raiders suffered a 41–6 loss to Lake Park. Glenbard South is 1–1. Willowbrook The Warriors fell to Oswego East 22–14, bringing Willowbrook’s record to 1–1. Montini Catholic Montini lost to Sandburg 35–28 after entering the week ranked No. 1 in the Class 4A state poll. The Broncos are 1–1. Football results

Cross CountryDistrict 87 Boys Meet Glenbard West captured the four-school meet with 25 points. Glenbard South placed second with 45, followed by Glenbard East with 73 and Glenbard North with 100. Girls Competition Glenbard West won a four-team meet with 30 points, edging York’s 34. Wheaton North finished third with 67, and Glenbard East placed fourth with 105. The peeling paint visible on Lombard’s historic Maple Street Chapel is only part of the problem. Beneath the surface, cracked flashing, deteriorating wood, failing trim and water intrusion threaten the building’s long-term preservation. Before the Chapel can be repainted, these critical repairs must be completed to protect the structure from further damage. For 156 years, Maple Street Chapel has welcomed weddings, concerts, memorial services, community gatherings and generations of visitors. Thanks to dedicated volunteers and supporters, it remains one of Lombard’s most treasured historic landmarks.
