More Storms Hit Sunday, 8/9 — More Tree Damage in Villa Park

If crews have not yet reached your street, please know they are continuing to work throughout the Village and, due to the significant amount of debris left behind and the number of storms occurring, will get to your area as soon as possible. Thank you to VP crews for the many hours they have dedicated throughout the week and for their continued cleanup efforts.
If you see a tree limb hanging dangerously over a roadway or sidewalk or encounter any other immediate safety issue with a parkway tree, please call Village of Villa Park's Public Works Department at 630-834-8505. You can also submit a request through the Village of Villa Park's website using the Public Works form, which includes the option to upload pictures: https://ow.ly/fhCS50ZxIBz
If you have any questions, please contact Public Works at 630-834-8505. Information about collection services can also be found on their  website: https://ow.ly/8s7F50ZxIJ6. Thank you for your patience as crews continue these cleanup efforts.

Willowbrook Graduate Allie Coppersmith Receives $1,000 Scholarship

Allie Coppersmith, a member of Willowbrook High School’s Class of 2026, was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Illinois High School Activities Foundation.

The scholarship recognizes Illinois high school seniors who plan to pursue careers in education, coaching or officiating. Applicants were asked to submit a video explaining how participation in high school activities influenced their lives and outlining their future plans.

Coppersmith was a standout member of Willowbrook’s softball team and will continue both her academic and athletic career at Millikin University.

Congratulations to Allie on this achievement and the next chapter ahead.

Lombard Student Grace Duffy Awarded Memorial Scholarship

Montini Catholic High School student Grace Duffy of Lombard has been awarded the school’s 2026 William Mueller Memorial Scholarship. Duffy, who is entering her senior year, is also a graduate of St. Pius X Parish School.

The scholarship honors former Lombard Mayor William Mueller and recognizes a Montini junior who has shown outstanding commitment to community service.

Duffy has volunteered extensively with organizations including Feed My Starving Children, Ronald McDonald House, Northern Illinois Food Bank and Downers Grove FISH Food Pantry.

Montini President Kevin Beirne praised Duffy for her genuine commitment to helping others and said her dedication to service has become an important part of who she is within the Montini Catholic community.

Wait Before You Buy School Supplies — There Are Tax Savings

Planning your back-to-school shopping? The timing could make a difference.

Illinois’ back-to-school sales-tax reduction runs from August 7 through August 16, lowering the state portion of sales tax on eligible school supplies, clothing and footwear.

What shoppers should know:

✏️ Qualifying school supplies are not subject to the $125 price cap
πŸ‘• Eligible clothing must be priced under $125 per item
πŸ‘Ÿ Eligible footwear must be priced under $125 per pair
🧾 City, county and other local sales taxes may still be charged

This is a temporary reduction in the state sales-tax rate, not a completely tax-free shopping event. Still, families purchasing supplies, clothes or shoes for the new school year may save by shopping during the designated dates.

Pass this along to a parent, grandparent or caregiver preparing for the school year.

Kick off the new school year with an afternoon of family fun at Yorktown Center!

Join us on Saturday, August 15 from 12pm – 2pm in Center Court for a Back-to-School Block Party featuring music, games, giveaways, shopping, and more.

Take advantage of the Illinois Back-to-School State Sales Tax Holiday by shopping your favorite apparel, footwear, and accessory retailers between August 7–15, 2026, then bring your qualifying receipts to the event to earn a Back-to-School Bonus Reward! Spend $100 or more at participating stores and redeem your receipts at the Yorktown Center table during the Block Party to receive a FREE $10 gift card to available Yorktown Center stores, while supplies last. Plus, qualifying shoppers will also receive a complimentary Yorktown tote bag, while supplies last.

Whether you're checking off your back-to-school shopping list, enjoying the entertainment in Center Court, or spending time with family and friends, the Back-to-School Block Party is the perfect way to wrap up your summer and celebrate the new school year.

Receipt Redemption Details

  • Shop participating apparel, footwear, and accessory retailers August 7–15, 2026.
  • Spend $100 or more (receipts may be combined).
  • The Illinois back-to-school sales-tax reduction runs August 7–16. Yorktown’s Back-to-School Bonus Reward promotion applies to qualifying purchases made August 7–15.
  • Redeem your saved, original receipts at the Yorktown Center table in Center Court during the event on August 15 from 12–2 PM.
  • Redeem your receipts for a FREE $10 gift card to a Yorktown Center store, while supplies last.

We can't wait to celebrate with you!

District 45 Referendum: What Villa Park-Area Residents Need to Know

School District 45 is asking voters to consider a limiting-rate referendum on the November 3, 2026 ballot as the district works to address an ongoing funding gap. The proposed 0.267% rate increase is expected to generate about $4.4 million annually for District 45 schools. For a home valued at about $350,000, the district estimates the increase would be approximately $299 per year, or about $25 per month.

The proposal follows the defeat of a District 45 referendum in March, when preliminary results showed voters opposed the measure 51.72% to 48.28%. District officials have said continued budget pressures could otherwise lead to larger class sizes, reduced programs and extracurriculars, staffing cuts, and possible future redistricting or school closures.

Residents who want to learn more can attend several upcoming District 45 town halls, including Wednesday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Schafer Elementary in Lombard and Saturday, August 22 at 10 a.m. at Jackson Middle School in Villa Park. Additional meetings are scheduled throughout August and September, giving residents opportunities to review the proposal and ask questions before Election Day.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Residents can find additional referendum information and upcoming town hall dates on the District 45 website.

Parking Changes Near Glenbard East Begin This School Year

As part of an intergovernmental agreement between the Village of Lombard and Glenbard Township High School District 87, student parking near Glenbard East is being shifted from Wilson Avenue to expanded parking areas on the school campus.

The changes are being introduced in phases with the goal of improving traffic flow and safety around the school.

Beginning in August 2026:

  • Parking will be prohibited on the south side of Wilson Avenue between Lincoln Avenue and Elizabeth Street from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days.
  • The current two-hour parking limit on Graham Avenue and Taylor Road, between Main Street and Edson Avenue, will be reduced to 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on school days.

Glenbard East has already added 110 parking spaces on campus, with another 30 spaces planned for 2027.

Residents, students and families who travel through the area should be aware of the new restrictions as the school year begins.

If you have read this far, you may be wondering why there is little coverage of tragic events, hate, or terrible crimes. There is already so much of that everywhere else. We want the Lombard Lilac Ledger to keep you informed while also bringing kindness, community connection, and a little joy to your Tuesday morning.

Best,

The Lombard Lilac Ledger is a local online newsletter for the Lombard, Glen Ellyn and Villa Park communities. It shares news, events, and fun things happening around town, along with highlights of local businesses and neighbors. Our goal is to help people stay connected and support the small businesses that make Lombard a great place to live. Each issue is positive, easy to read, and focused on bringing our community together. Because when we support local, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, and Villa Park grow stronger.
